THE COUNTY HAS A 2 TIER SYSTEM OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT WITH 1 COUNTY COUNCIL AND 7 DISTRICT COUNCILS.

THE COUNTY COUNCIL IS RESPOSIBLE FOR 500 BUILDINGS WITH AN ANNUAL ENERGY BILL OF £5 MILLON. HISTORICALLY, THE REGION WAS A MAJOR COAL MINING AREA, BUT SINCE THE LAST DEEP COAL MINE CLOSED. IN 1994, THE MAIN FORM OF HEATING IS NATURAL GAS WHERE IT IS AVAILABLE.
THE COUNTY COUNCIL IS PART OF THE ENERGY ACCREDITATION SCHEME AND HAS RECEIVED NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ITS ACTIVITIES IN SUSTAINABILITY AND RENEWABLE ENERGY.
