Lutsk is an ancient and modern city at the same time combining the authentic European refinement and genuine Ukrainian hospitality. Nowadays Lutsk plays a visible role in the political and economic life of the country and is an important industrial center. Due to its proximity to the north-western border of the country, the city plays an increasingly significant role for the European choice of Ukraine. The city is a natural combination of the historic past and modern times. The legendary quarters of the old city go together with its vivacious modern residential districts. This is what makes Lutsk particularly charming.
Today, Lutsk occupies the territory of 42 square kilometers. The city stretches from the west to the east and from the north to the south for 10 and 15 km correspondingly. As of January 1st, 2006, the city population constituted 204.8 thousand.
Lutsk is the administrative centre of Volyn, which is one of the regions that compose “Euroregion Bug”. “Euroregion Bug” includes boundary territories of three countries: Ukraine (Volyn region), Poland (Lublin province) and Belorus (Brest region) and is a union of voluntary cooperation between inhabitants of these countries and their local authorities. The organization works in the direction of intensification and expansion of the collaboration between regions, proposes common initiatives concerning cultural, civil and economic events, for example, fairs, shows, economic missions.
Output of products and services by industrial companies by major types of activities in 2005 (% of the total output): machine building (62.0%), food industry and processing of agricultural products (14.0%), chemical and petrochemical industry (5,6%), light industry (3,4%). In 2005 Lutsk exported goods to the total sum of 203996.2 thousand USD among which the biggest exports are: mechanic equipment, machines and units, electrical equipment and units, voice recording and playing devices – 45401.61 thousand USD; livestock and livestock products – 44194.21 thousand USD; phytogenic products – 23869.74 thousand USD; products of chemical industry and related industries – 21205.82 thousand USD; non-precious metals and goods made of them – 19835.18 thousand USD. The countries to which Lutsk companies export their products to the biggest amount are Russia separately (55121.05 thousand USD) and European countries (88003.09 thousand USD).
